The good manners of sleeping

There are good manners also in the kingdom of Hypno, a set of rules – or perhaps it is better to say 'expedients' – that allow living with the sleeping of others without generating frictions, but respecting everybody’s spaces and requirements. Dinners, sleep and good manners Showing up obviously late to a dinner you have been invited to – besides being lack of respect for the master of the house, who has prepared the food – violates one of the essential rules of respect of the sleeping hours, since the time of sleeping immediately follows the dining time... After-dinner, sleep and good manners At the end of a dinner, a sign of politeness would be asking the masters of the house a confirmation on their usual sleeping hours, in order to avoid overheating in board games or infinite conversations while the hosting family is yawning on the couch … The newborns’ sleep For a newborn, sleeping is something sacred. For this reason, before going to visit a couple of new parents, it is appropriate to be informed on the nap hours. Another small care: if the mother is particularly anxious, do not add fuel to the fire telling unlikely stories of children who have not slept for years … Sleeping in an aircraft or on the train Respecting the others’ sleep is a must. Therefore, stop the buzzers, the noisy videogames and avoid sitting and standing back continuously. Stockpiling all you might need during the journey (books, water, tablet...) helps not to move too much. Also mind the volume of the voice, which must always be low and courteous. When falling asleep, you should make sure not to 'fall' into positions that might hinder the movements of the others or invade their spaces. If you are a snorer, you should have some coffee... Sleeping on the right-hand or left-hand side? When two people decide living together, it must be defined who will sleep on the right-hand side and who on the left-hand one. The good manners dictate that the man (or – in any case – the 'strong one' of the couple) must sleep closer to the door, so to protect the beloved one in case of break-in. Night hours and apartment building: the good manners It is not granted that everybody stays awake up to the first hours in the morning; this is why one should limit as much as possible the night noise: switch the cellphones off, do not move chairs and walk without heels. Also mind the dishwashers and washing machines: if it is Saturday, start washing at least one hour later: the respect of sleep applies also to the morning hours! Hospitality and sleeping good manners Hosting a friend, a relative or even a person in need is a gesture of extreme generosity. For such generosity to turn into a pleasant experience for the guest, avoid having him/her sleep in the very old beach chair inherited from the cellar dismissed by your parents in law, avoid the sofa, but prefer a folding bed provided with a good mattress or – in case – of a good quality 'topper'. Special attention is to be paid to the bed sheets, blankets and pillowcases: they must have been freshly washed (to prevent the presence of mites), appropriate to the season, coordinated to one another and provided – if required – with 'supplements' in case of your guests are sensitive to the cold. Always provide water, a night light, magazines, a set of towels and a small provision of food. Mind the noise: perhaps your guest is a light/sleeper and will not be able to sleep if you play virtual tennis …
